I have been thinking about doing more in the way of public speaking. I have done some, but it seems my presentations are always months away, so I don't get an opportunity to sharpen my skills. Reading the above comments makes me think I should check out Toastmasters. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am one of those whose number one fear is giving a speech! I don't fear talking so much as I do the physical reactions that always accompany standing up in front of a crowd. I think the best speeches are the ones that are conversational and authentic. They are engaging and set the audience at ease. For the most part, if you can talk like yourself, the speech will have more impact and you will be more comfortable.

Thank you for sharing this information!

Public speaking has been a grand dream of mine. Oftentimes I would imagine that I am speaking in a large audience and I'm full of enthusiasm. In reality though, I can't even stand up straight in front of a small audience. Perhaps the basic thing to develop first is our confidence. :-)

what up Krishna !

I know when I have to give a presentation of something I definitely do my best to try to gather as much information as I can because it really makes a big difference in my delivery. and I definitely agree with just having reminders on some keypoints of the speech. It makes it more natural and more fun!

great post!

Hi Justin, Madeleine,

Thanks for the comments. Toastmasters is certainly transformational. Apart from building up speaking and communication skills, its a very supportive groups and a fantastic venue for networking. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking at these aspects...

Cheers,
Krishna

Krisha, A good post. Justin's suggestion is excellent. Joining a Toastmasters club is a terrific idea. I've been in Toastmasters for nearly 10 years, and continue to learn about public speaking as well as help others become beter speakers when I give evaluations. Other benefits are meeting many talented and supportive people and having a great time at the meetings.

The only thing I would add as is if you can look into toast masters. You get a supportive group that will help you get used to public speaking. The more you learn how to effectively communicate, the higher your chances of success in any endeavor. Communication increases your resources incredibly.
